About your kidney costume…….My 5 yr old son just received a kidney transplant and I am making him a kidney costume for Halloween. Can you explain how your costume was constructed. My audience will be hospital staff and I would like to make the costume as anatomically correct as possible. Many thanks for any advice you can give.
Best Regards,

Theresa, I hope your son is doing well and you are leaving the hospital soon! I know we talked privately but just thought I’d answer your question here too in case others want to know. The kidney costume was pretty basic in construction: two layers of canvas, painted and cut in a kidney shape (used a textbook for reference) and sewn together like a pillow. Put the right sides of the fabric together, sew, then turn inside out. I left it open at the ureter entry area (this is called the renal pelvis if you want to know!) and then attached the ureter after stuffing. In fact the ureter is only attached with safely pins so i can un-stuff it for easy storage!
The year I made this I couldn’t afford extra supplies so it was stuffed with clean laundry. The costume hangs on my front and is attached to me by very simple canvas straps!
